What is a Conjunctive Adverb?

conjunctive adverb is an adverb that joins two clauses. It is punctuated with a semicolon before it and a comma after it.

Some examples of conjunctive adverbs would be the following:

This climate is too hot for growing squash; however, chili peppers grow well in this heat.

The theater began to fill with concertgoers; meanwhile, the singers did vocal exercises backstage.

We had planned to go to the beach; instead, we played board games inside.

Kristen got stuck in traffic on the way to the show; consequently, she missed the opening act.

The marching band did not have enough money for new uniforms; therefore, they planned a fundraiser.
