Parentheses are punctuation marks used to enclose phrases or sentences that offer non-essential information.

Some examples of parentheses would be the following:

After twenty minutes of his presentation (which had a paragraph of text on each slide), most of the class was either furiously taking notes or nodding off.

The principal (affectionately known as “the warden”) angrily stomped down the hallway.
