What is a Dash?
A dash is a punctuation mark used to indicate an interruption or a shift in thought.
Some examples of dashes would be the following:
I am dying to see the new Star Wars movie – have you seen it?
Our teacher told us to only bring two things to the test – a pencil and a calculator.
Andrea’s brother – the star of the soccer team – got an athletic scholarship to a local university.
My favorite omelet recipe – I’ve been making it every morning – has mushrooms and red peppers.
Finally, be sure you understand the difference between dashes and hyphens. They look similar to each other, but they have completely different functions.
